Top 8 New Year Eve Apps iPhone
As the curtain closes on 2014, we take a look at the best apps that you can invest in when it comes to counting down to midnight on New Year’s Eve. Whether you are celebrating with family or friends, out on the town or at home, here are some apps for iPhone that are designed to improve your NYE experience! Take our advice and grab one or two of these before setting off on your New Year’s festivities: networks can be understandably busy when midnight nears, so it’s best to be prepared. Are you curious to see what NYE is like in other countries, or even in New York? That’s just one of the features that you will find below.
8. New Year Countdown ($0.99)
Of course, what would New Year’s Eve be without a countdown? There are plenty of free apps to make your countdown more personal, and this is one of our favorites. It was developed by timeanddate.com so you know it’s going to be the most official of the countdown apps on the iTunes Store, and boasts a bunch of cool features besides the visual countdown timer: you can check out the app’s New Year timezone map to see how the rest of the world is entering the new year – it also offers an interesting look at which country will break into the new year first, and which will get there last given the specific time zones. Despite being the neatest countdown app out there, it’s a shame this one isn’t free to grab! – Download on iTunes
7. Clink! (Free)
This is a cute little app that runs with the premise that just about everyone should be involved in the midnight toast, not just those who are drinking! So many people avoid alcohol these days for various reasons – least not when you are chosen as the designated driver and must be sober enough to drive people home at the end of the night. Drinking is a part of the celebrations on New Year’s Eve however, but we wouldn’t want you to feel left out. With Clink! you can select your drink of choice and then simply bump your phone against friends’ glasses and get that infamous clinking sound – it even vibrates! – so that you will always be included in the festivities, even when not drinking. – Download on iTunes
6. Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App (Free)
Everyone knows that the biggest NYE celebrations take place in NYC, and in particular Times Square. But who has the money to ring in the New Year in New York? With this app, you can experience this one-of-a-kind celebration no matter where you are in the world, and take in ceremonies and performances. Yes, the app features live streaming of the events in Times Square leading up to midnight, as well as highlights and other exclusive video content. Though, it should be noted that video streaming does require a good connection to work well – we would recommend avoiding 3G and sticking to the nearest WiFi connection when available. – Download on iTunes
5. LiveHotSpot NYC (Free)
Again, New York City is the place to be on New Year’s Eve and if you just so happen to be one of the lucky few then this tailor made app will help you make the most of your experience. It uses crowd-sourced figures to bring you all the latest NYE info right to your iPhone throughout the day and deep into the night! Really, this app is concerned with NYC nightlife and gives you up to the moment updates on your neighborhood (if you live there), but it’s also a great way to feel as though you are part of the action. – Download on iTunes
4. New Year Noise Maker ($0.99)
This app transforms your iPhone into a cacophony of New Year’s Eve-related celebrational noises and sounds, so is a great way for the little ones to make all the noise they can – something to rival those fireworks popping in the sky overhead! You can even shake your phone to change from one noise to another, without using the menu! If you get tired of the basic instrumental sounds included in this app – the horn, the twirler and the blowout – you can even select it to play the classic New Year Song. Though, perhaps it’s best to save that one for when everyone is ready to sing along! – Download on iTunes
3. BAC Alcohol Calculator ($0.99)
Having a good time on New Year’s Eve is of course the most important thing, but don’t forget to be responsible when it comes to drinking and driving. The BAC Alcohol Calculator app for iPhone costs $0.99 to purchase but is a great way to quickly determine if you or others can safely leave to drive home. It’s an app that I downloaded with NYE in mind but plan to keep it on my iPhone for the foreseeable future – there’s really no telling when an app like this will be useful, and it’s the kind of thing that can become indispensible – even save lives! Using the app is simple: you just add your drink by selecting from a range of typical beverages, and the app will go ahead and calculate your estimated blood alcohol level to determine whether or not you are sober enough to drive. There is a timeline feature that lets you add drinks at different times on your night out, though this won’t affect the final result. – Download on iTunes
2. Curb (Free)
Previously known as Taxi Magic, this app is a lot like the recent revelation known as Uber. Hailing a taxi downtown on New Year’s Eve can be a real nightmare, but this app allows you to pinpoint your location and find out how long before a drive will be with you. It even allows you to pay with your phone if low on cash! Requesting a ride takes mere seconds, but a taxi will be there with you in minutes. You can track your ride on the map as it arrives where you are, and then plot out the route as you’re driving and receive an email receipt once the journey is over. The only drawbacks with this app is that for one, it is only available in 60 cities in the US so (unlike Uber) can’t be used when travelling. Also, if you use it on New Year’s Eve, chances are the taxi fares are going to be higher than usual. – Download on iTunes
1. Commit ($2.99)
Once the dust has settled on New Year’s Eve, all that will be left is a hangover and a whole lot of cleaning up. But there are also your traditional New Year’s resolutions, so what better way to remind yourself of these than the Commit app for iPhone? It will give you daily and even twice daily updates to ensure you keep on track with your resolutions! And once you’ve used Commit to motivate yourself into sticking to those resolutions, you can continue to use it throughout the year in order to complete those all-important personal goals that we set ourself. Whether it be learning a new language or losing weight; perfecting a musical instrument or reading a certain amount of books a day (the sky’s the limit when it comes to uses!) Commit is a great way to go about it in a disciplined fashion! – Download on iTunes
